Three Photography program graduates from 3-6 years ago returned to DCTC this semester to be guest speakers in Darrell’s Business of Photography class. The graduates shared their experiences and challenges in getting their own photography business up and running over the last few years. Dawn Jensen, Four Season Photography in Apple Valley, shared her thoughts on starting and running a family portrait business out of her home. Sandi Coates, LifeTouch Photography – Edina office, discussed how her graphic design skills combined with her photo passion helps her create new and exciting products in the the corporate world of school/portrait photography. Josh Kohanek share his adventures of breaking into the commercial, editorial, and advertising industry as a freelance photographer over the lasts 5 years.
They all shared some of their stories and gave the students sound advice on what to expect in the “real world” and some suggestions on things that would help them succeed. A common thread seemed to be the need to keep your business fresh and vibrant by trying new things, getting as much skills and knowledge as you can, and networking with industry professionals. A big “thank you” to them for coming back and sharing with our program.
